Character history

Creation and development in Thimble Theatre

Zoopy was created by Bud Sagendorf in 1948 for the fourth issue of the comic book Popeye. He was first featured in the issue's third story, "Gift from Uncle Ben!" as a present for Olive from her Uncle Ben Zene. Little is known of these critters, but it is possible that they can be found in Africa where Ben Zene Oyl has found other strange creatures on his many adventures.

Biography

In the comic story "Gift from Uncle Ben!", Olive's uncle includes a letter to inform her about the zoop. He writes that the zoop is a friendly animal, but to avoid making him mad. The letter also explains that the zoop lives on peanuts and to give him plenty of them to keep him happy. No word is mentioned about what happens when the zoop gets mad, but Olive soon finds out.

When Olive makes Zoopy mad she gets "ZOOPED", as Popeye calls it. This means he flies up and dive-bombs down to smack your head with his head. Because of this, Olive gives Zoopy to Swee'Pea and they have several adventures together.

In the comic story "I Am The Mayor!", Zoopy and Swee'Pea fly off to save the town of Boghill, Arizona.
