You Gotta Be a Football Hero is Popeye's 25th theatrical cartoon, produced by Fleischer Studios and released by Paramount in 1935. It is notable as the final cartoon to feature Billy Costello's voice as Popeye before he was replaced by Jack Mercer. It also stars Mae Questel as Olive Oyl and Gus Wickie as Bluto.
Plot[]
Football captain Bluto flirts with Olive and makes her his cheerleader, leading Popeye to join the opposition. Bluto's team of hulking players is having an easy time with Popeye's team of thinner members, mostly thanks to strong Captain Bluto, and despite Popeye's nimbleness. With the rest of his team unconscious and himself taken to the limit, the sailor sportsman resorts to eating spinach. He multiplies his strength and blazes through Bluto's defenses (prompting Olive to switch to cheering him). He scores and wins the match, and Olive's love.
Notes[]
- The soundtrack is based on the song "You Gotta Be a Football Hero", written by Al Sherman, Buddy Fields, and Al Lewis in 1933.
