Character history

Creation and development in Thimble Theatre

Sweet Oyl was created by Bud Sagendorf for the Thimble Theatre daily comic strip, in the storyline titled "Dames!", which ran for six weeks.

Olive and Sweet never got along very well even when they were infants because Sweet always took things from Olive. When they were eight months old, Sweet took pins out of Olive's diapers. In "Dames!", she visits Olive to steal the man she loves. Luckily, Wimpy is willing to help Olive stop her cousin from stealing Popeye. Wimpy pretends to be Olive's boyfriend so Sweet will set her sights on him. This also works well for the moocher since Sweet tries to win his heart through his stomach.

The plan works fine until Sweet's boyfriend, Reep the Reaper, shows up. Reep is a big city hitman and plans to bump off the country boy Sweet is messing around with. Both Wimpy and Sweet point to Popeye as the guilty country boy. Olive runs to save her sailor from the killer, upon which Reep falls madly in love with her. Now that Olive has stolen Sweet's man, the two women start to fight. Olive eats Popeye's spinach and tears into her cousin like a wild animal, until Popeye makes her stop.
