"Plunder Down Under" is an episode from The All-New Popeye Hour's "Popeye's Treasure Hunt" segment for Hanna-Barbera Productions in association with King Features Syndicate.
Plot[]
This episode takes place in Australia. Popeye and Olive are there on vacation with Poopdeck Pappy. Popeye is expecting his Pappy to bring back some groceries, but instead they are being visited by a platypus with Pappy pipe. Using Pappy's pipe, the platypus spits out a note telling them that he is going after a big treasure called the Lightning Opal outback. He even left two mini opals for them. Popeye is sad that his Pappy left him for a treasure hunt again and almost didn't see Bluto take the note away from him. Bluto even squirts Popeye into the ocean, and Popeye gets attacked by a Manta Ray. But Popeye takes control of the sea beast and rides him towards Bluto. The Manta Ray them attacks Bluto, throws him down and loses the note back to Popeye and Olive. Bluto even crashes into a tree full of Koalas.
Popeye and Olive analyze a picture drawing, consisting of sheep, a train station and two dogs. Popeye sobbingly thinks that poor Pappy has gone to the dogs, when he really didn't. Those pictures indicate that Pappy has gone to a sheep ranch in Wagga Wagga. On the way, Bluto sidetracks our heroes to a boxing match with a baby kangaroo named Neal, to which Popeye is forced to participate. Popeye gets beaten up very easily by the big joey and it prompts Olive to take over and take down the tough marsupial. In defeat, Neal crashes into Bluto and thinks that he had won. Bluto apparently took his supposed victory to heart.
Popeye and Olive arrive at Wagga Wagga at the site of two tail wagging dogs. They then find Pappy's hat with a rock with two arrows on it. This indicates that Pappy is in Ayers Rock. But what they didn't know is that the area is inhabited by goons. The goons catch the heroes and drop them into a pit where they find Pappy, who's been cooped up down there for quite a while. While they are there, sand starts to fill up the pit. Bluto (looking for the heroes at the time) falls into the pit with the sand. Olive then sees a wooden trap door in the ceiling and the group forms a human ladder for Olive to reach the door. But when she opens the door, a giant lizard catches her and throws her into a cage. Popeye then eats his spinach, closes up the hole to which the sand goes through and by making a wooden ladder out of the trap door, he gets everybody else out.
When they emerged from the pit, Popeye encounters the goons again and takes them all out by playing pool as it were. Popeye then attacks the lizards who were busy frightening Olive, and turn them into dice (snake eyes). As Popeye releases Olive, Olive notices Bluto & Pappy going for Lightning Opal. Bluto takes care of Pappy who turns into a bowling ball to strike out the goons. Bluto attempts to escape with the opal, but Popeye stops him by throwing a boomerang to a door, after Bluto attempted to take down the spinach eating sailor with it. So Bluto crashes into the door, causing the opal to break open to reveal a female goon child. The goon child calls Bluto daddy, much to his dismay and Popeye's delight. So Bluto runs away in terror and made the goon girl cry. But Olive told her not to be sad as there are other goons that'll make great fathers. Pappy's upset that the Lightning Opal is nothing but kid's stuff; so he attempts to look for more and better treasure. But Popeye and Olive and tells him that it's time to go home.
On the way home, Olive mentions that they are sailing past the spot where Atlantis use to be before it sunk. Pappy, who obviously is still treasure hungry (maybe even more so than Bluto) and has certainly not learned his lesson, (definitely not since the events of Popeye at the Center of the Earth,) overhears this and thinks there's treasure down there. So he dives overboard. But Popeye (fed up with Pappy's antics), expected this and fishes him out, much to Pappy's chagrin. He even said that Popeye is no son of his and wants off. But Popeye and Olive laugh in delight.
