Creation and development in Thimble Theatre[]
Otto Oyl was created by Bud Sagendorf for the daily comic strip series Thimble Theatre. He was first featured in the story titled "Heiress!".
Biography[]
Otto Oyl is a billionaire tycoon who got rich because of his luck with money. It was so easy for him to make money that he no longer enjoyed it. He tells Popeye that he took a job as a ditch digger, but his first shovel came up full of gold. Every time he put his cane in the ground, he struck another oil well. He was so stressed out by all his money that he faked his death and left sixty billion dollars to his niece Olive. However, the money was so stressful for her too that she gave it all back as soon as she saw him again.
