Ocean Comics is an independent American comics publisher that has released one-shots and miniseries infrequently since the 1980s. They began to publish Popeye comics in 1987 with a Popeye Special, featuring their interpretation of Popeye's birth and early career, written by Ron Fortier and drawn by Ben Dunn in a somehow realistic yet still caricatured style. They would produce a second Special in 1988 to expand the story.
More than a decade later, in 1999, on the occasion of Popeye's 70th anniversary, Ocean released The Wedding of Popeye & Olive, a further one-shot written by celebrated author Peter David. While abandoning their earlier origins theme, this comic was also drawn in a more realistic style, by artist Dave Garcia.
