Character history

Creation and development in Thimble Theatre

Norman the Moon Plant was created by Bud Sagendorf, first appearing in the comic strip Thimble Theatre in 1960. Elsewhere, he had a featured role in the second story, "Moon Plant!", of Popeye issue 64 (1962).

Norman lives with Alice the Goon on Goon Island. He is friends with Popeye and is in love with Olive Oyl. Because Moon Plants have many powers, Norman is often in danger of being plantnaped. On one occasion, he found himself in danger of being captured by Brutus on Goon Island. Alice was afraid that she could not protect Norman herself, so she shipped him to Popeye for safety.

One of his many powers is to grow flowers that produce money. One flower can contain at least one hundred thousand dollars. Once, while visiting Popeye and Olive, he produced one trillion dollars for Olive, however, it took him a lot of time and energy to make this much money. Another drawback is the money only lasts during the growth cycle of a Moon Plant. When autumn comes, the notes turn into dried, brown leaves.
