Nintendo is one of the world's foremost video game and console companies. It was founded in 1889 in Kyoto, Japan as a playing card manufacturing company, and entered the video game industry in 1977. They are best known for creating franchises such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Kirby, Pokémon, and Animal Crossing.
During its history, Nintendo sold Popeye-based products, such as playing cards and the Popairamen instant pasta. Soon after moving to video games, they sought to develop a Popeye game. However, due to their equipment's graphical limitations at the time, the planned game had to be retooled with original characters, resulting in the creation of Donkey Kong. This game was a major success for Nintendo, helping their evolution into an industry giant and introducing their most popular character, Mario. Soon afterwards, they were able to produce Popeye games such as the Popeye arcade game, the Japan-only console game Popeye no Eigo Asobi and the Popeye Game & Watch units. However, the success of their arcade game adaptation never quite matched that of Donkey Kong.
In addition to their own games, Nintendo have produced various video game consoles in which Popeye games can be played, such as the Nintendo Entertainment System (host to a home version of their own Popeye arcade game as well as Popeye no Eigo Asobi); the Super Nintendo (where Technos Japan's Popeye: Ijiwaru Majo Seahag no Maki is played); the Game Boy (the system for Sigma Enterprises's Popeye and Popeye 2); the Game Boy Advance (Namco's Popeye: Rush for Spinach); and the Switch (the 3D version of the arcade game).
