Character history[]

Creation and development in Thimble Theatre[]

Mister Works was created by E. C. Segar for the 1933 Thimble Theatre storyline "Star Reporter". In the later "Puddleburg, the Laziest Town on Earth", he gave away his business to Popeye and Olive.

Biography[]

Puddleburg, the Laziest Town in the World[]

Wanting to leave his newspaper business behind, Mister Works left The Puddleburg Splash in the hands of Popeye and Olive.

Eventually, after much work (and beating up the Bruiser Boys Club that was plaguing Puddleburg), Popeye's newspaper became a hit and, with the increased success, Mister Works returned to buy back his old business from Popeye, but was shocked to hear Popeye asking $20,000 for it. Popeye explained that the high price was due to the newspaper now having over 25,000 subscriptions in over ten counties thanks to his team of happy and hard-working comic writers. Mister Works had no choice but to meet Popeye's demands, but as soon as he left, it was revealed that the team of comic writers (which included the ever-miserable B. Loony Bullony) were actually all down and depressed, even having to wear realistic-looking "happy" masks to hide just how miserable they were.
