This article is about the character. For the comic story in which she first appears, see Granny (comic story).
Miss Butterfly Poopdeck[1], better known as Granny, is a character appearing in comics, the mother of Poopdeck Pappy and paternal grandmother of Popeye. Her face and limbs are made to look remarkably like that of her grandson and son, but she wears feminine clothes and has long curly hair. She is known for her disastrous cooking skills, made worse as she remains an enthusiastic cook.
Given that she is Poopdeck Pappy's mother, Granny's age may well rise above a century.
Granny first appeared in the comic book Popeye in 1961 (in the story simply titled "Granny"), and was created by Bud Sagendorf.
Earlier version[]
Another version of Popeye's paternal grandmother, Gramaw Peg, had earlier appeared in the comic strip Thimble Theatre in 1943, created by Tom Sims and Bela Zaboly. However, this character was soon dropped and her physical appearance was recycled for Popeye's mother, who was introduced by the same authors a few years later in 1951. Since they share the same role, albeit having different names, it may be argued that "Peg" and "Butterfly" are in fact two incarnations of the same character.
Trivia[]
- A Popeye's Cartoon Club strip by Randy Milholland revealed that Popeye's unusual facial shape is passed down from parent to child, while those who marry into the family morph into it afterwards. This explains how the sailor's mother and paternal grandmother ended up sharing the same look.
