Production Information
First appearance Thimble Theatre (1959)

Burlo, an enemy of Popeye, is a character that appeared in the comic Thimble Theatre in 1959, created by Ralph Stein and Bela Zaboly near the end of their tenure on the strip (in the storyline "Nonny the Equine Genius"). Burlo is a cutthroat that fashions himself as a honest sea captain, aided by his equally corrupt crew. Most notably, Burlo is the twin brother of Bluto, although he distinguishes himself from his twin by not having a beard.

Character history[]

Unlike Brutus, who was created as a stand-in for Bluto and was only made to be the latter's twin after a period of decades, Burlo was presented as the more popular villain's brother from the start. This made it unclear if he was either an alternative to Brutus or a third brother, making them in fact triplets.

Eventually, he was confirmed to be the father of Hardtack in the September 18, 2022 Popeye Sunday strip by Randy Milholland,[1] fully establishing him as distinct from Hardtack's Uncle Brutus.
