Character history

Famous Studios

The character was created by Famous Studios for the theatrical short titled The Hungry Goat, which was released on June 25, 1943, where he served as the titular antagonist. The character was voiced by Gilbert Mack.

The Hungry Goat

A starving Billy is going through town hoping to find some cans to eat, but due to World War II, nobody is throwing away their cans anymore due to wanting to donate them to the war effort. So Billy is about to give up on life until he sees a giant warship and immediately begins chowing down, but unbeknownst to him, Popeye is currently serving aboard said vessel.

  • His name is a reference to the western outlaw, Billy the Kid, as well as the fact that "billy goat" is the name used to refer to male goats, while "kid" is the term used to refer to their young.
  • Gilbert Mack would later go on to do voice work for the English dubs of Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion and other Japanese animated series.
