Big Chief Ugh-Amugh-Ugh is the chief of a tribe of Native American Indians and a one-time foe of Popeye's, who tried to steal the hand of the fair Olive Oyl from him.
Character history[]
Creation and development in Fleischer Studios[]
The character was created by Fleischer Studios for the theatrical short titled Big Chief Ugh-Amugh-Ugh which was released in April 25, 1938, where he served as the main antagonist. The character was voiced by Gus Wickie who also did the voice of Bluto, and much like Bluto he also sought the love of Olive Oyl.
Also of note is that in a prior Fleischer Studios short titled I Yam What I Yam, another tribe of American Indians appeared resembling Ugh-Amugh-Ugh's tribe and even had a chief resembling him who was also voiced by Gus Wickie.
Famous Studios[]
Although Big Chief Ugh-Amugh-Ugh never appeared again, a relatively similar character who was also the "Big Chief" of his tribe appeared in the 1948 short Wigwam Whoopee by Famous Studios. However this chief was called "Big Chief Shmohawk" and resembled Famous Studios' depiction of Bluto but with a face much like Ugh-Amugh-Ugh's and even shared an attraction to Olive Oyl. The character was voiced by Jackson Beck, who also did the voice of Bluto at the time, much like what was done by Gus Wickie in the earlier period.

Big Chief Ugh-Amugh-Ugh[]
The Chief needs a squaw. when Popeye and Olive come along, he decides to make her his woman. He adorns her with jewelry and clothing to win her over. But Popeye and his spinach put an end to the Chief's courtship pow-wow.
